On Bikes and the Diminishing Returns of Innovation

Jun 24, 2020 · 4 min read · #thoughts

TLDR; Goods and services now accessible by everyday consumers are of extremely good quality. The impact of innovation faces marginal returns in both supply (ability of the manufacturer to innovate) and demand (ability of the consumer to adopt new innovations) Still, consumers like to splurge a little on quality products. #feelsgood. The circuit breaker has been a time of both contemplation and new hobbies. As one of the few permissible outdoor activities, I have begun a habit to run more in the nearby park and dusted off the old family bike (Ladies bike; my sister’s) to feel the wind in my hair, the rush of nature… whilst being legally compliant of course.

Opening Thoughts Slept late last night - cracking my head over the issues below. Not a terribly productive day, but I had been somewhat looking forward to continuing on the project. Ended up reading a light book on military history before bed, delaying bedtime that little bit more… Cracked Heads and Eye Bags Ran into several issues while doing this. d3.js library was initially not working with some demo code.

TLDR; I propose a web project that combines several of my interests areas. It touches on: Visualisations of complexity; a mapping of my life, a One of the projects I intended to host on this website was a visual representation of my intellectual (?) progress. TLDR; I ramble about my early life and how it has confused / shaped my identity; In my last post, I had a notion about whether patriotism can exist in metropolises. The obvious counterpoint is Hong Kong. A raw demonstration of fighting for one’s survival. Were these for individual reasons? A manifestation of youth unrest? Those seeking to protect what is familiar and the current way of life?

On the Hong Kong Crisis

TLDR; Hong Kong is on a long-term structural decline; It is not in China’s interest to save it; I find this sad. My connection with Hong Kong The place renders an odd feeling in me. I am, and fully identify as being Singaporean (perhaps an idea worth exploring in future posts) in citizenship, but I am half-Hong Konger in blood. I am also perhaps Hong Kong-er in name (canto surname, canto spelling) I have only been there twice in my life.

A Template of my Own

TLDR; Nothing substantive, just notes on the website updates Update on Website Another week - another revision. Welcome to version two of site - rebuilt from scratch with a generoues does of customised appropriated snippets of code. This guide in particular was helpful in laying out the groundwork from Hugo. Still fairly minimalist, but I have much better control and understanding of where the various elements are situated.

TLDR; A digital identity is critical in this day and age, but it is often too easy to lose control of it. Instead, we should take control of our own digital narrative by designing and customising a personal website. I explain how I did so. Conception If what I do is common - I tend to read the latest few posts and first post when visiting a new blog.
